7 Things That Actually Live in My Diaper Bag
For the waits you never plan for. The doctor running 25 minutes behind, the coffee line, the sibling's swim lesson.
Fits in a bag · No batteries · Nothing to plug in or charge
Updated August 2026
The pediatrician is running 25 minutes behind. My son has licked the fish tank, pulled two magazines apart, and is now negotiating loudly for my phone.
I open the bag. Wipes. A diaper. One dead crayon.
It took me four years to work out that the problem was never the waiting. Waits are twenty minutes and they happen constantly. The problem was that I kept packing for the trip I was on instead of leaving things in there permanently.
So the rule now is that nothing earns a spot unless it lives in the bag forever. It has to be light enough that I forget it is there, need no batteries, and survive being handed to a toddler in a room full of strangers.
Seven that have stayed in. Ranked by how often they get pulled out.
I do not pack for outings any more. The bag is already packed. That is the entire system and it took me two children to work it out.
1. Montessori Busy Board
★★★★★ 4.8 out of 5, 1,148 reviews
"My toddler loves the busy board! His favourite thing at the minute is the zips and laces. We take it out and about with us and is just a life saver when at restaurants!"

- Why It Is First
- It is the only thing in the bag that reliably buys more than ten minutes. Thirty plus real fastenings, and nothing that lights up or makes a sound, which matters when you are in a waiting room and not a playground.
- The Bag Test
- Folds shut like a book and lies flat down the side. Nothing detaches, so there is no floor sweep before you leave somewhere that is not your house.
- Ages
- 6 months to 5 years
2. 7-in-1 Montessori Cube
★★★★★ 4.8 out of 5, 90 reviews
"Such a smart toy for curious babies. It keeps little hands moving and minds focused."

- Why It Made The List
- Handbag sized. This is the one that goes when I am not carrying the full bag, which is most school runs and every quick errand.
- The Bag Test
- Nothing comes off it. Wipes clean, which it will need.
- Ages
- 12 months to 3 years
3. Rattle Toy Socks
★★★★★ 4.8 out of 5, 36 reviews
"My baby loves the feet rattles… the hand ones are meh. I got him them when he was just over 3 months old and he’s older but still love them. They are great to slip over socks that are already on too. The fact there are no sizes makes this good to grow with and fit all foot sizes."

- Why It Made The List
- For the stage where you are holding a baby on a plastic chair and have nothing to offer them. They go on the feet, so there is nothing to drop and nothing to pick up off a waiting room floor.
- The Bag Test
- They are socks. They live in the side pocket and weigh nothing.
- Ages
- 3 to 12 months
4. Soft Building Blocks
★★★★★ 4.7 out of 5, 85 reviews
"The most beautiful building blocks. Super high quality. Came in a great box to store them in. So happy with my purchase."

- Why It Made The List
- The floor option. When a wait turns into a long one and they need to be out of the chair, these work on any surface and make no noise when they fall.
- The Bag Test
- Honest note. These are the bulkiest thing here. Mine live in the car rather than the bag, and come in when I know we are somewhere for a while.
- Ages
- 6 months to 3 years
5. Montessori Geometric Eggs
★★★★★ 4.8 out of 5, 1,148 reviews
"We are very pleased with the geometric eggs - my granddaughter really enjoys opening and closing them, they are a good size for her hands. They were easy to order, and swiftly dispatched. Regular tracking information was provided too. Thank you for a great shopping experience."

- Why It Made The List
- Small, quiet and genuinely absorbing for the twelve to twenty-four month stretch, which is the hardest age to sit still with.
- The Bag Test
- The one honest warning on this list. They are small and they do go missing. Take two, not the whole tray, and count them back in.
- Ages
- 12 months to 3 years
6. Sensory Fruits and Veggies Sorting Set
★★★★★ 4.7 out of 5, 128 reviews
"MY 3 MONTH OLD BABY LOVES THESE TOYS. Very soft, many colors and different textures. My baby favorites were the corn, strawberry and Carrot. Beware , this toys HAVE TO BE HANDWASH, no laundry machine. Very cute toys, good size for infants. Good quality for the price."

- Why It Made The List
- The cafe option. It is a table activity, so it works in the place where you are trying to drink something hot while it is still hot.
- The Bag Test
- Packs into its own bundle. Soft, so nothing clatters.
- Ages
- 18 months to 4 years
7. Montessori Farm Animal Set
★★★★★ 4.8 out of 5, 55 reviews
"So many different educational purposes for these barn animals! Learning the different animals, numbers, colors, opening and closing! These get played with every day by my almost two year old son and he's had them for almost a year!"

- Why It Made The List
- The one that buys the longest wait, because it turns into a story rather than a task they finish.
- The Bag Test
- Twenty small pieces somewhere that is not your house is a lot to keep track of. I take four animals and one barn, not the set.
- Ages
- 2 to 5 years
One Last Thing
None of this is about being an organized parent. I am not one. It is about removing the decision entirely, so that the bag is already right whether or not I was thinking clearly when I left the house.
Most orders arrive in about a week. There is a 30-day trial if it turns out not to suit.
If you only put one thing in, make it the Busy Board. It is the only one here that reliably outlasts the wait, and it is the one I would notice missing.
